Shitty First Drafts
Quote: "We all often feel like we are pulling teeth, even those writers whose prose ends up being of the most natural and fluid."
Question: Is misery and agony felt when writing just a part of the process, or is it the true mark of a great writer?

"Pulling teeth" is such a good metaphor for the brainstorming stage of the writing process. It is painful and uncomfortable but it is necessary. I have noticed that it is helpful for me to use techniques to make brainstorming more fun and less stressful such as thinking maps and lists.
ReplyDeletei am not the greatest writer and i still feel the same way some times when brainstorming , as if I'm pulling out teeth, I'm sorting for information to make sound more fluid.

ReplyDeleteI'd have to say sometimes when having to write creatively it does feel like you are pulling teeth, as the right things to say do not always come instantly. I think that this applicable to talents in general, as they most of the time aren't formed over night, and require practice just as a good piece of writing requires a process to perfect. And to add to your question, I think that the stress felt when writing is just a part of the process, but wouldn't consider it the "true mark" of a great writer, as almost writers experience it when trying to produce their best work.
